My journey as a bassist...

Bass Lesson Update

Oaky, so it has been a while since I really posted anything with true substance and in relation to what this site was created for.  So here we go...

Well, I have to say it has been tough getting back in the groove of being a student again.  As I stated before, in one of my earlier posts, I have been working mainly on my sight reading skills.  This has proved to be a bigger challenge than I antisipated.  Since I have been playing bass for over a decade, my tendancy is to want to play faster than my eyes can read so, I have spent a lot of time trying to slow my tempo down and get back to basics.  It's all about merging my current talents with my emerging talents to become a well rounded musician.

We have also been doing a little jamming as well.  This has allowed me to build my chops and play at a more comfortable speed.  Last week we did a simple jam in G and it sounded pretty good.  The one thing that my instructor noticed, and so did I, was that I tend to play the bass like a guitar player.  I almost try to over compenstate. This could be a result of playing in bands with guitarists that needed that extra push behind them or from that fact that I used to be a guitarist myself, but most likely I think its a combonation of both.  Anyways, once I was able to slow down the groove was awesome.  It felt good to lay down a simple groove and truely be the heart beat of the jam.\

That's it for now.  No lesson this week with the Thanksgiving holiday around the corner, but stay tuned for updates on a more regular basis!

Have a great holiday everyone!

Been a while...

Well, it has been a few days or so since my last post.  It has been a pretty crazy week or around here.  Being the end of the month and all, work gets much more involved as we try to hit our monthly sales and financial goals. Sufficient to say, we ended the month short of every goal.  At least the month is over!  Tomorrow starts a new month so as we enter in to the holiday season, I am looking forward to renewed successes and improved year over year growth.

Also,  I mentioned that I would be posting some pictures of my gear, and I will post them as soon as possible.

Hope everyone has a Happy Halloween!

GO YANKEES!

Hey all, gonna post some pics of my gear soon. Stay tuned!

Side Note

You have got to be kidding me!

The local alt rock radio station in the area has been running this contest call the $5000 Fugitive. It has been running for the better part of 2 or 3 months now. Basically they set it up so that the "fugitive" broke into the studio and stole this $5000. Then, every day at 8, 12, and 4 the fugitive would call the station and give a clue, but his or her voice was altered by a voice scrambler or something. So this morning, the fugitive was finally caught. Come to find out, the guy who was playing the part of the fugitive is my bass teachers business partner! I was literally sitting in the studio with him last night during a session! He was right there in front of me and have friendly conversation with me! I can't believe I didn't put it all together! Unreal! Anyways, just a side note. I missed out on winning $5000 by a hair!

Yesterday's Lesson

Its funny how we tend to forget the basics. I mean, I have been playing bass for 14 years and I consider my self a good player, but when that lesson book was placed in front of me yesterday, I felt like I couldn't get out of my own way! The book I am working from is to help me start readin music, which I never fully learned. What makes it tough is that my hands and mind want to fly from one end of the fret board to the other, but my mind has to concentrate more on what note is which. It was a humbling lesson and a reminder that a house is only as strong as its foundation and every now and then, the cracks in the foundation need to be fixed. So, here's to new beginnings and the restoration of my musical house from the ground up!
